I noticed the name David Hester on the 1949 school photo. I came across him in September 1971. Like me, he was a keen chess player and I remember him turning up at the High Wycombe Chess Club which I also frequented at that time. I played a couple of casual games against him (I even noted down the score of one of them, a draw, which I still have). I think he had emigrated to Australia some years before and was paying a nostalgic visit to Blighty for a month or two. A quick flick round Australian chess websites showed him playing chess in Adelaide in 2004. A bit more googling showed him on the research staff of the Classics department at the University of Adelaide. The following page provides an email address if anyone wants to get in touch with him: https://hss.adelaide.edu.au/classics/staff/?template=1 - yet more googling shows him to have spent 46 years on the Adelaide classics teaching staff until his retirement in 2003.

I'm pleased to notify you that the additional names, recently contributed by Tony Barr & Peter Varley, have now been added to the 1949 school photograph. The updated listings can be viewed on Tony Hare's website:-

http://www.rgs.tonyhare.co.uk/photos/1949/1949.htm

The 49ers have put names to around 50% of the faces in the 1949 photograph, which is no mean achievement. Terry Williams has been working hard to contact former pupils. However there must be others out there, who I'm sure will be able to contribute! Do you know of any?
If so please contact me.

Further updates have been made to 1949 School Photograph following a couple of additional names received from Michael Aldridge (1944-49). The revised lists can be viewed on Tony Hare's RGS website at http://www.rgs.tonyhare.co.uk/photos/1949/1949.htm
Around 60% of the faces in the photograph have now been identified; that's no mean achievement! However, I'm sure that there are other 49ers out there who will be able to contribute names. If you know of any please make them aware of this project in respect of the 1949 School Photograph and also those being co-ordinated by Brian Ransley for the 1947 and 1952 School Photographs.
A Happy New Year to you all.

I am reasonably certain that I just scraped into the 1949 RGS photo, Row D at the far right - place 16 or thereabouts.
