Edgar Louis Granville, Baron Granville (1898-1998)

The May 1968 Wycombiensian had this snippet in the Old Boys' Notes: E. GRANVILLE (1908-9?). Capt. Granville was one of the new life peers created by the Prime Minister recently. He was formerly Liberal M.P. for Eye, Suffolk. The Bucks Free Press gave his age as 68 and said he was an Old Boy. No trac...

Re: Old Wycombiensian Magazines Available Online

The number of Wycombiensians available online on my site has now swelled to 23... http://www.rgs.saund.co.uk/wycombiensians.html ... and I still have eight more to be scanned and uploaded. That will take me a little while yet (I've a busy time doing other things from now until Xmas). Has anyone got ...

Re: PLJ

Thanks to the kindness of Mervyn Darville, I now have a copy of the May 1971 Wycombiensian and it does have an obituary of PLJ. Here is the link to the full issue: http://www.rgs.saund.co.uk/pdfs/viewer.html?file=1971-05-wycombiensian.pdf Here is the relevant extract: Mr. P. L. JONES (1916-64) [died...

1929 and 1926 School Photos

Derek Prior (RGS 1962-69) has very kindly sent me scroll photos of the RGS in 1926 and 1929, which I have prepared for the web. I've now completed work on the 1929* photo - here is a link: http://www.rgs.saund.co.uk/1929section1.html And the May 1926 photo: http://www.rgs.saund.co.uk/1926section1.ht...

Re: Old Wycombiensian Magazines Available Online

Three more old Wycombiensians went online today: May 1959 , April 1960 and September 1961 . Many thanks to Martin King for lending me these issues. I still have 14 of my own collection of Wycombiensians to scan and put online, ranging from 1965 to about 1972, and that will take me some time. After t...

So you think you know your old school?

Occasionally, when trawling through old school material, I come across something which would make good quiz material. How about this? "Eleven hundred boys gathered to pay tribute to the man who... had obstinately refused to prohibit roller-skating in the streets of London." Who? And when d...

The English - Are They Human?

I thought this rather splendid and provocative piece from the April 1955 Wycombiensian deserved a wider audience. It was written by Barri Jones, son of two members of the RGS staff, Emlyn and Phyllis Jones (or "Chunk" and "Ma Chunk" as we knew them rather better). Barri was in th...

News Flash... new RGS headmaster in school wear controversy...

... but I'm being a bit mischievous. I am not referring to Roy Page's successor in 2015, but the redoubtable Edmund Ronald Tucker on his arrival at the RGS in 1933. I found this in the Dundee Evening Telegraph for 27 September 1933 (yes, I'm a bit behind with my reading)... SCHOOL BAN ON PLUS FOURS ...
