John Pidgeon (1947-2016)

Sad news. One of our most distinguished old boys, John Pidgeon, has died, aged 69. His full name was William John Gilmour Pidgeon, and he was at the RGS from 1958 to 1965. John's Wikipedia entry lists him as "journalist, author, music historian, radio producer, comedy executive and crossword co...

William Watmough (1934-2013)

OWs of the period 1960-63 may well remember the modern languages master William Brian ("Willie") Watmough, who I have just discovered passed away in 2013. He wasn't at the school very long but made his mark as an organiser of amateur dramatics and overseas trips for those wishing to develo...

Scandal Magazine - Read It Online...

I've been very quiet recently, working on a different web project, but today I received something interesting through the post - a PDF with issues 7 to 18 of SCANDAL Magazine. This was the famous/notorious 'alternative' school magazine from long before the adjective 'alternative' had this modern mea...

Re: Jeremy Lingard

Hi Ian,

Jez Lingard was clearly a very popular teacher at the RGS as you are not the first who has asked after him.

Chris Betteley told me he chatted with Jez a while back and sent me this photo of him (around 2012, I think)...

Re: Charles Garner and Colin Day at Oxford in 1964

Roy Thomas Ashwell, born 1927, English master from 1961 to 1964

I've been updating the list of RGS Masters and in the process stumbled on quite a bit of information about Roy Thomas Ashwell (born 1927), who taught English at the RGS and ran the school library from 1961 to 1964. Aged 88, he is still writing poetry, as he has done for 60+ years, and getting it pub...

Headmaster from 1843 to 1852 - Edmund/Edwin Fox

The school history has the following to say about the headmaster of the school from 1843 to 1852... The new Master was Edwin Fox, who had been usher at Kingston College, Hull. He was presumably faced with the task of reanimating a school that was sadly run down. He stayed at the task for eight years...

Re: Old Wycombiensian Magazines Available Online

I've now completed the task of uploading PDFs of all the Wycombiensians in my possession, plus various copies I have been lent by Martin King and Mervyn Darville (for which many thanks)... http://www.rgs.saund.co.uk/wycombiensians.html So the current range available is September 1957 to September 19...

Roger Scruton mentions the RGS...

I've just had my attention drawn to this interview with Roger Scruton (RGS 1954-62) in The Guardian of 4 October 2015... http://www.theguardian.com/culture/2015/oct/04/roger-scruton-my-father-looked-like-jeremy-corbyn-fools-frauds-firebrands-interview The RGS gets a mention in a section about Scruto...

School History Available Online

I've made the RGS School History available online here as a viewable/downloadable PDF file (5.31 mbs). http://www.rgs.saund.co.uk/pdfs/viewer.html?file=1962schoolhistory.pdf Its official name is ' The History of the Royal Grammar School High Wycombe 1562-1962 ' and it was written by two RGS masters ...
