RGS Masters Play Cricket, 1938

A trawl through old newspapers revealed that some RGS masters played cricket for local sides in the 1930s. Here's an item from the Bucks Examiner of 1 July 1938... 1938-cmh-plays-cricket-2.jpg 1938-cmh-plays-cricket.jpg It shows HG Brand, TE Hood, CM Haworth and FGH Hearn playing for Misbourne again...

1964/65, Form 2B Photo

I have just posted a new photo on the website - a 1964/65 photo of Form 2B, kindly sent in by Andy Lake. http://www.rgs.saund.co.uk/196465form2b.html Most of the faces have some sort of identification but there is scope to do some detective work for those who enjoy that sort of thing. Many thanks to...

Re: The day we declared war on the prefects

A small footnote to this oft-told tale. In 1797 there was a 'great rebellion' of boys at Rugby School which also began with a window being broken... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1797_Rugby_School_Rebellion ... and ended with the army being called in to quell it. Mass floggings followed. Note the ex...

Re: The day we declared war on the prefects

Since this series of posts in 2013, the school website has been through various changes, resulting in most of the OW material being removed. This means that several of the links above no longer work. Very annoying! However, I have kept copies of many OW magazines and can reproduce parts of them here...

Archive of Old OW Newsletters

All those splendid newsletters that Ian Clark produced as Hon.Sec. of the Old Wycombiensians between about 2001 and 2012 seem to have disappeared from the official school website. This seems a great pity as Ian put so much effort into them and he was rewarded with some really interesting contributio...

1816: RGS Master Sacked - and Reinstated

Just over 200 years ago, William Sproston, RGS headmaster, was dismissed by the borough corporation and then subsequently reinstated after taking them to the high court. Further down the page are the full details of the legal case as recorded in the Windsor and Eton Express , 30 June 1816. This matt...

John Camp (1944-2016)

Some very sad news: John Camp died on 17 October 2016, aged 72. He was both a pupil at the school (1954-60) and a master (1967-68), and you can find some biographical information which I have compiled about him in the RGS Masters' list and the School Honours Board list . John, who was a member of th...

1882 Demolition of the Old School

I came upon this heartfelt letter from an old boy of the school which was published in the South Bucks Free Press, on 9 June 1882: THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL REMAINS AT THE GRAMMAR SCHOOL — LETTER FROM AN OLD PUPIL To the Editor of the “South Bucks Free Press" Sir.—In the year 1857 I had the good fortu...
